Hinton House
Clean, modern forms complement a conventional California ranch-house aesthetic in this budget-conscious addition. Currently undergoing plan review, the Hinton Residence will be a partial remodel of ground floor living spaces and second story master suite addition to a single story post-war ranch house in Santa Monica’s Sunset Park neighborhood. As with all Jesse Bornstein Architecture designs, the addition seeks to bring natural light and ocean-borne breezes into the home, while opening up previously sequestered spaces to themselves, and to the outdoors, to increase the home’s ability to flow. By reorienting the main entry to the side of the home, the ground floor’s circulation is transformed, providing a central point of departure to the reconfigured kitchen/dining area and to the expanded living area, which will open itself to a privatized portion of the front yard. The new second story addition sits over the living area and engages itself into the existing bedroom wing, providing a unique interplay between the gable-roofed vocabulary of the original home and the rectilinear, broadly overhung forms of the addition. Finish materials reinforce this interplay, with cement board cladding providing a scale reference typical to residential forms, while contrasting with the stucco finish portions of the home.
